Create a Written
Emergency Plan
Have a houseshold discussion about what to do in case of emergency. Create a
written
emergency plan that addresses the following:

Determine and document a pre-defined meeting place.

Identify at least one escape route for each room in the house.
Multiple escape routes are desireable.

Ensure each member of the household knows where to find the "grab
and go bags".
- Make sure children know when to call 9-1-1.
- Identify an emergency muster/reunion point.
- Have an offline copy of emergency contact information.

Prepare Grab and Go Bags
A "Grab and Go" bag is intended provide basic support for approximately 72 hours.
Each member of a household should have his or her own "grab and go
bag". A basic "grab
and go" bag could have the following items:
- Food items (protein bars)
- Bottled water
- Warm clothing (sweater, hat, gloves, blanket)
- Change of clothes
- 100$ cash in small bills and coins
- First aid kit
- Flashlight
- Pocket Knife
- Copies of important documents
- Prescription medications, medical documents
- Pet food and pet medications

Establish a 14 Day Food
and Water Supply
Families are encouraged to store a 14 to 30 day supply of food, water and basic household items.
- An average person needs 2100 calories/day.

4 Liters (1 gallon)/day/person for 30 days. Water placed in
sealable & sanitized containers. Add 1/4 teaspoon of plain
(standard) bleach per gallong of tap water.

Actively use and replenish your emergency supply to keep it
current.
Build Finacial
Self-Reliance

Start building an emergency savings/reserve. Little money, saved
regularly can accumulate to significant amounts over time
- Keep a number of small bills at home in a safe place

Follow the principles of provident living (spend less than you
earn, avoid debt, live within a budget, reduce what you spend on
non-essential items)

Ensure adequate insurance coverage (home, personal, auto, etc...)
- Have a visual inventory of valueable belongings

Gather financial and critical documents on a USB thumbdrive
(passport, drivers license, birth certificate, social insurance,
medical information, immunizations, medications, other official
documents, etc...)
